Periods: Why Shouldn't They Be Gentle?

Let's talk periods. A topic often shrouded in secrecy, whispered about, and met with a resigned sigh or groan.

Why? Because for far too long, periods have been synonymous with discomfort,

Buddhism and Hinduism, women are deemed as unclean during their periods. In Hinduism, they are barred from entering temples when menstruating. It was thought a woman should never step foot on a newly sown field, for fear she would spoil the earth and ruin the harvest. Laughable, when women embody fertility and harvest through the cyclical ebb and flow of their fertility and menstruation.


Luckily, women farmers, gardeners and more have successfully proven we do not spoil a harvest. These enduring societal taboos, historical and religious legacies combined with a lack of open communication, and the misconception that pain is just part of the deal – something we must bear (also a religious legacy) - all contribute to the idea that periods are to be endured, not embraced.
